Morocco and US Pledge to Deepen 240-Year Partnership Across Multiple Sectors

Morocco and the United States of America are determined to strengthen their bilateral relations, in all sectors, according to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans Residing Abroad, Nasser Bourita, during the joint press conference held at the end of the exchanges between the Moroccan diplomat and the US Under Secretary of State, Wendy Sherman.

The relations between Morocco and the USA have lasted for more than 240 years, and extend on the political, economic, security, military and human levels. "We have stressed that the relations between Rabat and Washington have the necessary assets and legal framework to raise them further and give them greater substance in order to embark on a new stage commensurate with the aspirations of the two countries to face the challenges in place and examine the priorities that are imposed at the regional and international levels," said Nasser Bourita during this joint press point.

The minister stressed that from a legal and institutional point of view, these multidimensional relations need to be strengthened to meet the aspirations and expectations of the two countries. With the US Under Secretary of State, Wendy Sherman, the exchanges also focused on the clear and constant position of the United States on the Moroccanness of the Sahara. Issues related to the consolidation of regional and global peace were discussed. "The world is currently facing multiple security challenges and we must work as allies and partners to strengthen the contribution of our bilateral relations to peace and security in the Sahel, Africa and other countries."

Nasser Bourita stressed that as the visit of the American official coincided with International Women’s Day, it "was an opportunity to discuss the reforms undertaken in Morocco under the leadership of King Mohammed VI over the past 20 years, which have seen considerable development in terms of promoting the status of women and their empowerment on the social, economic and legal levels."

During their meeting, the two officials noted the fundamental role of the United States in promoting a tripartite cooperation (Morocco-USA-Israel). Nasser Bourita and Wendy Sherman reviewed a series of issues of common interest, including security cooperation and human rights, insecurity in the Sahel, Libya and Ukraine.

The minister also mentioned a series of meetings planned with American officials in the coming months, including the visit of Secretary of State Anthony Blinken in May to chair the meeting of the International Coalition against Daesh, and the meeting of the Afro-American Economic Forum, which will be held in July in Marrakech.
