Morocco and Algeria Accused of Blocking Repatriation of Illegal Immigrants

The repatriation of migrants from Belgium to their countries of origin has seen a sharp decline during the health crisis due to the coronavirus. Certain countries, including Morocco, are accused of closing their borders to their nationals.
In addition to Morocco, Algeria is also denounced for the closure of its borders. These two North African countries do not favor the forced return of travelers, reports VRT News, citing the Office of Foreigners.
In detail, of the 321 people without a residence permit repatriated in February to their countries of origin, only 22 remained in Belgium. The same source states that illegal immigrants convicted of irregular offenses are the only travelers who have been forcibly repatriated. For most of them, they return to European countries such as Albania, Romania, the Netherlands, Poland and Serbia.
In total, 100,000 to 150,000 foreign nationals still live without a residence permit in Belgium, despite the order to leave the territory. They reside there without support or benefits.
