Morocco Allocates 150,000 Hectares for UK-Bound Renewable Energy Project

Morocco has planned a 150,000 hectare domain in the Guelmim-Oued Noun region for the realization of the Xlinks project, designed as part of the electrical interconnection between Morocco and the United Kingdom.
According to the report on public land mobilized for investment in 2022, the allocated area corresponds to the project’s needs for the realization of a 3,800 km submarine power line that will connect the two countries.
Endowed with a budget of more than 200 billion dirhams, Xlinks will build a 10.5 gigawatt renewable energy complex in Morocco to produce electricity from wind and solar energy. It will be connected to a 5 GW/20 GWh storage unit in the country.

Ultimately, the infrastructure will be able to supply 8% of the UK’s needs, and could power 7 million British households. The start of the work is scheduled for 2023 and the commissioning in 2027.
