US-Morocco Alliance Raises Concerns for Spain’s Strategic Position

The political and military alliance of the United States with Morocco compromises the future stability of Spain, analyzes a Spanish journalist.
US President Joe Biden is working to strengthen his relations with Morocco at the expense of Spain, the journalist develops in an opinion piece published by La Razón, stating that the US administration does not trust the government of Pedro Sanchez, which maintains open or discreet relations with the enemies of the United States in Latin America (Peru, Cuba, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Argentina).

The United States had clearly threatened Spain, under Felipe González who hesitated to join NATO, to move military bases to Morocco. The President of the Spanish Government, realizing the consequences of such a reaction, integrated Spain into the Atlantic Alliance, recalls the journalist.
Former US President Donald Trump recognized Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara in December 2020, a decision that has not been reversed by President Biden. This renewed confidence of the United States in Morocco compromises the future stability of Spain, argues the journalist, for whom this American-Moroccan political international alliance risks in the long run to seriously weaken Spain.
