Morocco-Algeria Border Briefly Opens for Migrant’s Repatriation

The border between Algeria and Morocco was exceptionally opened this week to repatriate the body of a 28-year-old Moroccan migrant who drowned in Algeria.
The body of this young man, who disappeared in November while trying to emigrate illegally, was found a month later on the Algerian coast. In December, his family recognized his body with the support of a non-governmental organization, which also helped organize the repatriation.
The Algerian and Moroccan authorities collaborated and accelerated the procedures to facilitate this repatriation. The body was handed over to the deceased’s brother at the Zouj Bghal border post.
A few days ago, the borders between the two neighboring countries had also been opened for the return of several young Moroccans detained in Algeria.
