Morocco: Alcohol and nightclubs, the start of the truce before the month of Ramadan
Exactly one month before the start of the sacred month of Ramadan, some Moroccans are beginning their usual period of abstinence by stopping the consumption of alcohol and frequenting nightlife establishments. This practice, although devoid of legal or scientific basis, remains a firmly rooted custom in Moroccan society as the fast approaches.
For citizens who observe this informal rule, it is a way to prepare themselves to receive the blessings of the sacred month. This decision to interrupt alcohol consumption forty days before the deadline directly impacts the night-time economic activity, forcing many nightclub promoters in several cities of the Kingdom to close their doors throughout the Ramadan period.
However, this tradition does not enjoy unanimous support and regularly sparks debates within public opinion. Some believe that abstaining from drinking or frequenting bars only during this specific period is a "pure hypocrisy". This observation is shared by Moroccan jurists who specify that this rule is dictated neither by Islam, nor by the Quran, nor by the Sunnah of the prophet.
Experts point out that this is a popular practice that has become widespread over time without being based on the words of religious scholars. Nevertheless, the custom persists, marking the beginning of a social transition each year before entering the month of piety.
