Morocco Aims to Vaccinate 70% of Population to Avoid Second COVID-19 Lockdown

Morocco is preparing to vaccinate its population as early as this week. A second lockdown could be avoided once 70% of the population is vaccinated, said Dr. Aziz Bousfiha, professor of pediatrics specialized in genetic susceptibility to infections and inflammations at the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy in Casablanca.

Pending the first batches of the Sinopharm Covid-19 vaccine to launch the national vaccination campaign, the health authorities are working hard to make this feat a success. Since the reception of the two million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine, the training sessions have been chained and the preparations continue, not to mention the distribution of the first batch of the Indian laboratory vaccine in the regions of the national territory, reports Hespress.

The objective of this campaign in Morocco as well as in other countries is to eradicate the coronavirus. To succeed in this challenge, Morocco should "vaccinate a respectable percentage of the population with the vaccine". "If we do not cross the 70% mark of vaccinated people, the unvaccinated could saturate the hospitals and prevent those suffering from chronic and acute diseases from receiving the necessary care," warns the director of the Laboratory of Clinical Immunology, Inflammation and Allergy, Dr. Al Maghribi. The specialist in genetic susceptibility to infections and inflammations does not rule out a return to quarantine if the vaccination rate is low.

According to Dr. Al Maghribi, "preliminary data show that vaccinated people can carry the virus in the upper respiratory tract, but it has not been proven to date that they transmit the virus." For Dr. Al Maghribi, "The vaccine is our hope for a return to normal life," noting that "immunity is acquired 14 days after the second vaccine injection." The doctor also reassures that "the vaccinated person will not get the severe type of Covid-19, and in more than 90%, he will not develop any symptoms of the disease."
