Morocco Aims to Reduce COVID-19 Reproduction Rate Below 1 as Cases Rise

The head of the communicable diseases division at the Directorate of Epidemiology and Disease Control at the Ministry of Health, Abdelkrim Meziane Bellefqui, presented on Tuesday the biweekly report on the evolution of the epidemiological situation at the national level. He indicated that the ministry is working to lower the virus reproduction rate.

This rate is 1.11 and the Ministry of Health hopes to see it settle at -1 in the short term. During his presentation, the official stressed that the number of infection cases from September 7 to 13 reached 14,292, compared to 10,995 from August 31 to September 6. The number of recoveries increased from 8,919 to 12,254, while the number of deaths decreased by 13%.

Regarding the distribution of the weekly incidence rate, Meziane Bellefqui noted that the regions with an incidence rate of 20/100,000 inhabitants are the Oriental, Tangier-Tétouan-Al Hoceima, Fez-Meknes, Guelmim-Oued Noun and Laâyoune-Sakia El Hamra. It was recorded between 20 and 50/100,000 inhabitants in the regions of Rabat-Salé-Kénitra, Béni Mellal-Khénifra, Marrakech-Safi and Souss-Massa and more than 50/100,000 inhabitants in the regions of Casablanca-Settat, Darâa-Tafilalet and Dakhla-Oued Eddahab.

In terms of global and continental ranking, Morocco, in light of the latest statistics, ranks 38th in the world and 3rd in Africa in terms of the number of infections. It is 44th worldwide and 4th in Africa in terms of the number of deaths and 32nd globally and 2nd in Africa in terms of the number of screening tests performed.

The Ministry of Health called on citizens to strictly respect the preventive measures put in place by the competent authorities, in order to contain the spread of the coronavirus.
