Morocco Aims to Eradicate AIDS by 2030, Health Minister Reports 15,000 Current Cases

In a presentation on the state of affairs of AIDS patients in Morocco, the Minister of Health and Social Protection stated that 15,000 people are currently living with the disease, assuring that he wants to eradicate it by 2030.

In a presentation to the deputies, Khalid Ait Taleb indicated that the realities imposed by the coronavirus pandemic have meant that some diseases like HIV have been relegated to the background. But taking advantage of the presentation of the draft budget of the Ministry of Health for the year 2022, at a time that coincides with the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the creation of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, the minister drew the attention of the deputies to this disease and the ravages it continues to cause.

According to Al Massae citing the Minister of Health, 15,000 HIV-infected patients who are regularly cared for by the health authorities have come to terms with the disease and are living with it. This, according to Khalid Ait Taleb, is in itself a victory against the virus. Morocco, he stressed, is the first country in the Middle East and North Africa region, and the 7th in the world, to receive successive grants from the Global Fund to fight AIDS and tuberculosis. About $130 million has been injected into the fight against this disease through various projects.

Thanks to these measures and the establishment of adequate infrastructure, the training of professionals experienced in the task, and the mobilization of various partners, Morocco has been able to avoid more than 27,000 deaths and more than 50,000 new HIV infections.
