Morocco Aims to Develop Domestic Covid-19 Vaccine, Become Biotech Hub

Moroccan health and biomedical research specialists stressed on Tuesday the opportunity for Morocco to manufacture a Covid-19 vaccine by Moroccan laboratories. This was during a scientific meeting held in Rabat in the presence of experts and specialists from several countries around the world.

It is necessary to develop and manufacture Covid-19 vaccines in Morocco and to establish the country as a "biotechnology hub at the regional and continental levels," these researchers participating in a scientific meeting under the theme: "What post-Covid-19 strategy: towards the development of a human vaccine in Morocco?" argued.

According to the participants, the initiative will allow the Moroccan market to have its human vaccines under better conditions, particularly in terms of cost and deadlines. For Professor Azeddine Ibrahimi, director of the biotechnology laboratory, Morocco is able to develop such a drug, despite the expensive cost of the process, reports Assabah. The daily adds that Professor Ibrahimi is counting on partnership and cooperation between scientists, researchers and pharmaceutical companies for the realization of this project.

To counter the spread of the new coronavirus in the country, it was necessary to adopt the non-medical strategy, based mainly on compliance with preventive measures and barrier gestures, the health protocol adopted by the country and the vaccination campaign, said the director of the biotechnology laboratory, during the same meeting. "This has allowed the country to gradually achieve the objectives of stabilizing the epidemiological situation," rejoiced Azeddine Ibrahimi.

On the occasion of this scientific meeting, experts and specialists from several countries around the world presented various biotechnology experiences in the development and manufacture of vaccines. These scientists came, in particular, from South Korea, the United States of America, France, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria and Morocco.
