Morocco Aims to Build 2 Million Social Housing Units to Meet Urban Demand

Morocco will still have to build nearly two million social housing units to meet the still strong demand, said Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri, the Minister of National Land Use Planning, Urban Planning, Housing and City Policy.
Since the end of the social housing program in December 2020, this need for two million units, of which 87% are in urban areas and 13% in rural areas, has always existed, the minister recalled during her appearance on Tuesday before the House of Councillors.
In total, 600,000 social housing units have been built in different regions of the kingdom as part of this program launched in 2010. And 100,000 additional units should be completed by 2026, under the agreements signed before 2020.
The new direct housing assistance policy for first-time buyers, the effectiveness of which is announced for next year, should help achieve this goal. The draft decree setting the amount and terms of the aid is under study by the General Secretariat of the Government, she added.
The new mechanism will allow low-income households to acquire housing at a maximum of 300,000 dirhams and middle-class households to obtain housing at a maximum of 700,000 dirhams. Single mothers and widows can also benefit from this measure.
