Morocco Aims to Become Renewable Energy Powerhouse, Investing Billions in Green Hydrogen

Morocco maintains its ambition, that of bringing the share of renewable energies to more than 52% by 2030. It is betting on an investment of one to two billion dollars per year.
During a plenary session entitled "Green Hydrogen and the Road to COP28", organized on Tuesday in Marrakech as part of the third edition of the Global Power-to-X Summit, which brings together more than 1,000 participants and 170 international experts, who share their expertise in 35 scientific sessions and five parallel events, Leila Benali, Moroccan Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, emphasized the importance of tripling annual investments in renewable energies, in order to prepare a future economy based on green hydrogen, reports Alsharq Al-Awsat. Her country’s wish, she said, is to invest in partnership with the private sector, between one and two billion dollars per year, consistently, in order to build a stronger social and economic model and accelerate the energy transition.
The minister believes that green hydrogen could be an effective solution to decarbonize the energy sector, particularly in light of high energy consumption. She also stressed the need to "follow a practical approach to achieve our goals, including meeting 52 percent of our energy needs from renewable energy sources by 2030." Noting that Morocco has gained extensive experience in the field of renewable energies and has significant qualifications in this field, Benali highlighted the exceptional solar potential in several regions of the country, as well as political and legal stability, thanks to a favorable environment for investors and advanced partnerships with the European Union.
