Morocco Aims for 75% Air Traffic Recovery in 2022 as Travel Rebounds

In a context marked by the improvement of the health situation and the resumption of travel around the world, the National Airports Office (ONDA) hopes to reach this year a recovery rate of 75% of air traffic compared to 2019.
Taking stock of the activities of the airport authority for the year 2021, the Ministry of Transport and Logistics, indicated in a press release that the drop in global air traffic, following the advent of the Covid pandemic, impacted the activity of Moroccan airports. However, the sector has started a recovery.
According to the figures, 3.2 million passengers were welcomed during the period from February 7 to April 30, 2022, which represents 64% of the air traffic recorded during the same period in 2019. The turnover reached 2.1 billion dirhams, an increase of 34% compared to 2020 and a decrease of 50% compared to 2019.
Regarding air freight, it also recorded a recovery, reaching 70,000 tons, an increase of 14% compared to 2020 and a decrease of 27% compared to 2019, the same source said, adding that aircraft traffic recorded, for its part, a progression of around 42% compared to 2020 and a decrease of 51% compared to 2019.
Operating expenses recorded 1.8 billion dirhams, a slight increase of 0.5% compared to 2020, and a decrease of 7% compared to 2019. Overall, the Office recorded a deficit of one billion dirhams, the statement concluded.
