Morocco’s Aging Population: Quarter of Citizens to be 60+ by 2050, HCP Reports

By 2050, a quarter of the Moroccan population will be made up of people aged 60 and over, reveals the High Commission for Planning (HCP). A demographic trend that raises many questions.
In Morocco, the population is getting older and older. "The figures go from 9.4% of the population in 2014 to 23.2% in 2050, or about 10 million elderly people," informs the magazine Challenge, specifying that the same trend is also observed in Tunisia and Algeria.
In Tunisia, the elderly population has almost doubled in 30 years, going from 4.1% in 1956 to 17.7% by 2029, according to projections. From 3.5 million in 2006, the senior population in Algeria could reach 6.7 million in 2030 and a little more in 2050.
"This aging of the population poses new challenges in terms of health, economy and society, forcing Morocco and its neighbors to rethink their approach to accompany this inevitable demographic transition," adds the magazine.
