Morocco Advances Plans for New Tangier-Tetouan Highway Project

The Ministry of Equipment and Water is working on the realization of a highway between Tangier and Tetouan to then connect Fnideq, which already exists. In this sense, the department of Nizar Baraka is launching the definition studies of a high-level service highway axis between Tangier and Tetouan.
A step forward for the project to connect the highway of the city of the strait with that of Tetouan-Fnideq. The Ministry of Equipment and Water will soon launch the studies for the realization of this infrastructure. "As part of the development and modernization of the national road network, the Ministry of Equipment and Water is working to improve the travel conditions of users by implementing several ambitious programs whose main axes are now focused on the user, his safety and his needs. The Tangier-Tetouan highway with its connection to the Tetouan-Fnideq highway would strengthen the transport offer of the Tangier metropolis and the surrounding cities, and would accompany the significant growth recorded in the project area," explained the department of Nizar Baraka.
By initiating the project consultation, the ministry expects appropriate solutions in terms of planning, cost and meeting needs based on relevant technical, economic and environmental studies. It is also a question of identifying opportunities to create and develop a high-level service highway link that can strengthen the infrastructure network in the area made up of the provinces of Tangier and Tetouan.
"The overall work necessary to arrive at the best development plan must deal, in sufficient detail, with all the major issues that such infrastructures are likely to raise: prioritization of needs and objectives, traffic demand, accessibility and connection of metropolises and major centers, connection to the road and highway network, road safety conditions, economic and tourism development and impact on the environment," details the department of Nizar Baraka.
The studies include the preliminary design, for each variant, and the multi-criteria analysis which must compare them to arrive at the determination of the most suitable scenario for the future Tangier-Tetouan highway axis with its connection to the Tetouan-Fnideq highway. A study to define the selected development plan for the projected highway axis is also planned. The realization of all these studies will be done progressively.
