Morocco Advances National Digital ID System to Bolster Data Protection

The National Commission for the Control of Personal Data Protection is working to finalize the architecture of identifiers at the national level.
According to the CNDP, this upgrading of personal data protection mechanisms aims to strengthen the protection of citizens within the digital ecosystem and align national practices with international standards in order to facilitate and secure exchanges with the Kingdom’s economic partners.
In this context, several sectoral works are being deployed, including the definition of the architecture of identifiers that can be retained, in a differentiated manner, by different sectors.
In this regard, a working workshop was organized with the World Bank, in Rabat, on Monday, February 17, 2020. During this meeting, the CNDP shared with about ten experts from this institution, as well as several national experts, the basic principles for defining the logic of the identifier architecture to be deployed in a state of law. According to the same commission, this workshop led to, among other things, 2 major conclusions. The first concerns the architecture of identifiers to be deployed; which should promote the implementation of sectoral identifiers. As for the second, it takes into account the authentication data that must be separated from the usage data.
Furthermore, the CNDP intends to continue its consultations, while inviting various institutional, economic, political, civil society actors, national and international experts, to express their needs and views on the subject.
