Morocco Advances $320 Million High-Speed Rail Project from Kenitra to Marrakech

The National Railway Office (ONCF) is accelerating the realization of the High-Speed Line (LGV) connecting Kenitra to Marrakech. After the civil engineering works, those related to the installation of the signaling and telecommunications system will be able to start. They should cost nearly 3.2 billion dirhams.

The signaling as part of the Kenitra-Marrakech LGV project takes into account the new line, as well as existing facilities, including operating lines. "Safety will have to be maintained during the work on the signaling and telecommunications installations in operation, and the complexity of this implementation will be accentuated by the safety constraints," the Office’s press release states.

The company that will be selected to carry out the work will be responsible for the supply, deployment, testing and commissioning of a transmission network comprising a FOB fiber optic backbone network and the active network system (routers and switches or DWDM equipment or others). The Kenitra-Marrakech LGV project also plans to rehabilitate the classic line between Kenitra and Settat, it is recalled.

The new line will connect Kenitra to Marrakech, passing through Rabat, Salé, Casablanca. New stations including Marrakech Palmeraie, Marrakech Guéliz, Marrakech Stadium, New Terminal of Mohammed V Airport in Nouaceur, Grand Stadium of Benslimane will be built as part of the project, as well as complementary developments will be carried out at the level of the existing terminal facilities and stations.

Moreover, the scope of the safety and signaling installations to be carried out includes the extension of the LGV from Kenitra to Marrakech Guéliz, including all the intermediate stations, with the exception of the ERTMS level 1 section of the Rabat Agdal station; the connections to the classic line at the level of Sidi Ichou, on both sides of Rabat Agdal (Salé to the north and Ain Attiq to the south), Zenata (north of Casablanca), Nouaceur New City, south of Bouskoura and north of Berrechid, etc.
