Morocco Added to France's COVID Red List, Dealing Blow to Tourism Sector

France has placed Morocco on its red list of "countries where the virus is circulating quite actively with worrying variants". Nicolas Brumelot, president and co-founder of MisterFly, says that the kingdom’s "move to red is a blow" for the tourism sector.

"Morocco is an important destination on the French market. Fortunately, the peak of departures to Morocco is over. We are in the late season. We will nevertheless have to manage a certain number of cancellations and postponements, which is exhausting for the teams. However, we have gotten used to seeing countries open and close. We are used to making and unmaking. More broadly, Morocco’s move to red is a blow and a negative message that reinforces the climate of uncertainty hanging over the fall. Without any visibility, nowhere to go, so to speak," said Nicolas Brumelot in an interview with L’Écho touristique.

According to the president and co-founder of MisterFly, the demonstrations, the Delta variant, the lockdowns in certain regions of the world, the third vaccination and the closed long-haul create a highly uncertain environment. "This also confirms that we are not out of the crisis. This is the big lesson of this summer," he summarizes. As for the summer balance in terms of destinations, Nicolas Brumelot said that Greece is the best-seller of the summer. "France has also performed well, especially Corsica. Southern Europe - Spain, Portugal, Italy - as well. North Africa has been more complicated, with Tunisia, Morocco and Algeria more recently moving to red. North America and Asia have remained closed, long-haul has not been able to take off," he added.
