Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi Faces Spain in World Cup Clash After Choosing National Team

A few hours before the kick-off of the round of 16 match of the World Cup between the Atlas Lions and La Roja, PSG star Achraf Hakimi explains his choice to opt for the Moroccan sports nationality instead of that of his country of birth, Spain.
Born in Madrid and trained at Real Madrid, Achraf Hakimi will play against his country of birth, Spain, on Tuesday (4pm) for a place in the quarter-finals of the World Cup in Qatar. Meanwhile, he has returned to the choice of his sports nationality. "Yes, there were moments in my youth. There were contacts, I also went for a trial with the Spanish national team, with De la Fuente. I spent a few days in Las Rozas and I saw that it was not the right place for me, I did not feel at home," said the PSG right-back in an interview with Marca.
And he added: "It was not because of anything in particular, but because of what I was feeling, because it was not what I had learned and lived at home, namely Arab culture, the fact of being Moroccan. I wanted to be here."
