Morocco Achieves 99.78% Rural Electrification, Benefiting 13 Million Citizens

In rural areas, Morocco has reached 99.78% electrification in 2020, allowing nearly 13 million Moroccans to have electricity for a total amount of 24.65 billion dirhams (MMDH). This is what the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE) reports.

In 2020, the Office invested 8.3 MMDH, including 3.6 MMDH for the electricity activity and 4.7 MMDH for the drinking water and liquid sanitation activity, ONEE said in a statement. At the end of 2020, with regard to the "electricity" activity, national demand reached 38,372 GWh, a decrease of 1.2% compared to the level reached in 2019, due to the pandemic and its impacts on the country.

The "Water & Sanitation" activity achieved 1,257 Mm3 in 2020 to meet the needs of the population. During the same year, the laying of more than 629 km of drinking water supply and distribution pipes was carried out. Thus, 13 million inhabitants benefited from drinking water in rural areas. As for liquid sanitation, 7 new wastewater treatment plants have been installed with an additional global flow of 7,024 m³/d, bringing the connection rate to the public sewerage network to 90% and the wastewater treatment rate to 82%. Furthermore, over the past five years, the Office has made a net profit of 2.252 MMDH in 2020, an increase of 279%, according to its CEO, Abderrahim El Hafidi.
