Moroccans Lead in European Citizenship Acquisitions, Eurostat Reports

In 2019, Moroccans were the most numerous to acquire European citizenship. Out of around 706,400 people, there are 66,800 Moroccans who have obtained the citizenship of a Member State of the European Union (EU). They are followed by Albanians (41,700) and the British (29,800).
According to Eurostat data, 84% of Moroccans became Spanish, Italian or French citizens in 2019. As for the British, 75% obtained German, Swedish or French nationality. Regarding Syrians, 69% acquired Swedish nationality and 57% of the 28,600 Turks acquired German nationality. Similarly, 60% of the 26,600 Romanians obtained Italian or German nationality.
Among the 23,500 Brazilians, 73% acquired Italian or Portuguese nationality, while 59% of Ukrainians became German, Polish or Italian citizens. Of the 18,000 Algerians, 82% became French citizens and 31% of the 16,400 Russians obtained German citizenship.
