Moroccans Lead in EU Citizenship Acquisitions, Eurostat Reports

According to statistics from the EU Statistics Office (Eurostat), more than 825,000 people, including 67,848 Moroccans, acquired the citizenship of a European Union (EU) country in 2017. Moroccans are thus at the top of the pack, with 8% of this total.
More than 825,000 people obtained the nationality of a European Union (EU) country in 2017. Italy takes first place, with 18% of naturalizations. The United Kingdom follows with 15%, as do Germany and France, with 14%.
Spain accounts for 8% of the total naturalized (66,498) and ranks fifth. With the total naturalizations by EU countries, there is a decline of around 170,000 people. The granting of nationality is estimated at 995,000 naturalized in 2016, compared to 825,000 in 2017.
Among the main beneficiaries of a European nationality in 2017, we note 67,848 Moroccans, which represents 8% of the total. They thus occupy the first position. Albanians follow with 7% of this total (58,853). India and Turkey are tied for third place, with 4%.
