Moroccan YouTuber Jailed for Criticizing Government in Viral Videos

The Court of First Instance in Casablanca handed down its verdict on Thursday, March 25, in the case of Moroccan YouTuber Chafik Omerani, alias "3robi F Merican". The man was sentenced to three months in prison with a fine of 40,000 dirhams.
Chafik Amrani, alias "3robi F Merican", was wanted for "suspicion of criminal acts" and for "publishing a series of videos containing insulting and defamatory expressions against constitutional institutions, organized establishments and public officials". He was arrested on February 6 at Rabat-Salé airport as he was returning from the United States where he resided.
The YouTuber is known for his critical videos about Morocco. After his arrest, he had gone on a hunger strike of more than 40 days as a form of protest.
