Moroccan Youth Rescued After Dangerous Swim to Ceuta Amid Surge in Illegal Crossings

Whether by land or sea, illegal or clandestine entries into Ceuta have increased sharply in recent weeks. This is the case of a young Moroccan, with only a child’s float as equipment, who, at the limit of his strength on the Chorillo beach, was rescued after a call from a citizen.
The unfortunate adventurer was transferred to the Tarajal hangar, before being taken care of by the Red Cross, while submitting to the health protocol and respecting the quarantine period, reports El Faro de Ceuta, adding the case of another young Moroccan, who, dressed in a wetsuit and equipped with a inflatable child’s float, earlier this week, braved the swell and managed to reach the coast of Ceuta. He too was apprehended by the Civil Guard who entrusted him to the Red Cross, because he presented very slight symptoms of hypothermia.
Maritime arrivals in Ceuta have increased by more than 220% and by 90% by land compared to the same period last year, the same source indicates, specifying that the overall data for Spain announce a 4.6% drop in migrant arrivals with 202 fewer arrivals than in the first two months of 2020.
Given the flow of recent days, the Spanish Association of the Civil Guard (AEGC), in statements to El Faro de Ceuta, calls for a stronger presence of surveillance personnel on the coast to avoid loss of human life.
