Moroccan Women Face HIV Crisis: 70% Infected by Husbands, Study Finds

Moroccan women are the primary victims of HIV/AIDS. The discrimination they face complicates their access to testing.
In Morocco, out of the 21,000 people living with HIV, 40% are women and 70% of them have been infected by their husbands, according to the Association for the Fight against AIDS (ALCS).
According to the ALCS, several factors limit Moroccan women’s access to information and care services, and make it difficult to raise awareness among them. There is mainly their dependence on their husbands, fathers, and brothers for their mobility and health care. As a result, it is difficult for them to access prevention and testing services.
"These discriminations exacerbate the exposure of women who are already the most vulnerable to the epidemic," laments the association, which has made the bitter finding that women do not benefit from the many programs it offers in its care and listening centers.
