Moroccan Woman’s Suicide Highlights Social Pressures on Single Women

A 40-year-old woman committed suicide in Tetouan by hanging herself in her family home because she had not yet married.
A real tragedy has just taken place in Tetouan, according to information relayed by the media Fesnews: a woman would have committed suicide by hanging, inside the family home, because of her difficulties in finding a husband and starting a family.
The media, citing local sources it does not specify, explains that the mental health of this 40-year-old woman had been low and had been deteriorating for some time, due to her singleness which, according to her, was never-ending. She therefore finally lost hope.
An investigation has been opened by the security services to determine the ins and outs of this case. The body of the deceased was taken to the morgue, still according to Fesnews.
At the beginning of the month, a young girl who had just got married committed suicide by hanging at the home of her family in the village of Mansour, near Chefchaouen, at the age of 17.
