Moroccan Woman Found Dead in Spain, Suspected Victim of Gender Violence
The lifeless body of Fatima, a 45-year-old Moroccan woman, was found on Sunday in a vehicle on a road in the Garganta del Ter region (Girona) in Spain. She would have been the victim of a sexist crime.
Fatima arrived in 2014 in Torroella de Montgrí (Girona), a small town of 11,000 inhabitants where she lived and worked in the restaurant sector. The 40-year-old of Moroccan origin was found dead on Sunday, at the wheel of a vehicle. She had several knife wounds on her body, which led the Mossos d’Esquadra to open an investigation for homicide.
Sources close to the case have told Ara.es that the trail of the sexist crime is being considered, at the current stage of the investigation. However, the victim had never filed a complaint against her partner, who is still being sought, according to the Superior Court of Justice of Catalonia. Municipal sources also claim not to have noted an intervention of the social services with Fatima as a victim of domestic violence.
Fatima’s relatives reported her disappearance to the Mossos d’Esquadra on Saturday, after unsuccessfully trying to reach her on her cell phone. Finally, they managed to locate the phone, which allowed the Mossos to find Fatima in the car near the mouth of the Ter. An autopsy is underway to determine the exact cause of death.
According to the same sources, Fatima lived with her adult son in Torroella. The town hall announced the sad news to one of her brothers who does not reside in the city and has already assured him of its "aid and support," said Jordi Colomí, the mayor of Torroella, also condemning this crime. The municipal council has decreed two days of official mourning in the city. If the thesis of the sexist crime is confirmed, Fatima would be the first victim of the year 2024.
