Moroccan Woman Accuses Husband of Rape in Spanish Court After Arranged Marriage

A Moroccan woman filed a complaint against her husband, also of Moroccan origin, before the court of Zaragoza. She is asking to have him convicted of rape.
The couple did not have a love relationship before their arranged marriage by their families in Morocco in 2019. The husband, Yassine B., had been living in the Aragonese capital for some time and went to Morocco to get married to his wife who joined him a little later, in September 2020, after he had completed all the administrative formalities for family reunification, reports Heraldo.
But once in Spain, the woman informed him that she did not want to live with him. However, she lived in the same apartment as the husband until February 2021, before filing a complaint. "We only had sexual relations during the three days when we were together in Morocco for the wedding. When she arrived here, she didn’t even let me kiss her. She slept in the living room and I in my room," said the husband who denied the accusations of rape and sequestration of the woman.

"I married him by obligation," said the woman who appeared by videoconference before the court. According to her testimony, she agreed with her husband to sleep in separate rooms until she found accommodation. But the latter would have sexually assaulted her on two occasions.
The plaintiff stressed that these acts took place in the first few days of her arrival in Spain and that afterwards, the accused no longer tried to have sexual relations with her, adding that "she was afraid" because the husband had threatened her with death several times. The brother of the defendant, who lived with the couple, rejected the allegations of his sister-in-law, specifying that she had never been sequestered or asked her husband’s permission before leaving the apartment. For the prosecutor, these facts do not constitute a crime.
