Moroccan Watermelon Prices Soar in EU Markets, Outpacing Spanish Competitors

Moroccan watermelons are sold five times more expensive than Spanish ones on the European Union markets during the 2021/2022 campaign. A difference that shocks some producers.
According to data from the Euroestacom (Icex-Eurostat) statistical service for the period between August 1, 2021 and July 31, 2022, Moroccan watermelons are sold at a better price than Spanish ones on the Community markets. Over the past four seasons, Moroccan watermelon sales have increased by 70.76% while Spanish ones have fallen by -43.88% in the EU.
Despite the drop in sales volumes, Spain continues to be the country that sells the largest quantity of watermelons on the markets of the EU member states, with 407 million kilos for a total value of 283 million euros (0.69 euro/kilo) for the 2021/2022 campaign. Morocco, for its part, reached 258 million kilos of watermelons sold on the Community markets for a value of 189 million euros (0.73 euro/kilo).
Italy is the third largest supplier of watermelons in Europe, with a volume of 158 million kilos sold for a value of 76 million euros (0.48 euro/kilo). Greece follows with a volume of 90 million kilos sold for a value of 35 million euros (0.38 euro/kilo).
