Moroccan Watermelon Exports to EU Plummet 50% in Early 2024

In the first half of 2024, Moroccan watermelon exports to Europe fell by 50.31% compared to the same period last year.

Morocco exported 85,090 tons of watermelons in the first six months of 2024, representing a market share of 13.34%. Compared to the same period last year, these exports fell by 50.31%, reports the specialized site Hortoinfo, citing data from the Euroestacom (ICEX-Eurostat) statistical service. Despite this significant decline, Morocco was the second largest supplier of watermelons to the EU markets, behind Spain and ahead of the Netherlands and Turkey. In terms of revenue, Morocco is in third place, behind Spain and the Netherlands. The value of Moroccan watermelon sales in the EU in the first half of 2024 reached 74.72 million euros, with an average price of 0.88 euros per kilo.

Spanish watermelon exports reached 149,630 tons in the first half of 2024, a decrease of 51.81% compared to the same period last year. Their market share is 23.46%. In terms of revenue, Spanish exports generated 133.04 million euros, with an average price of 0.89 euros per kilo. Dutch watermelon exports, on the other hand, generated 77.55 million euros, with an average price of 1.12 euros per kilo. Dutch watermelons are among the most expensive of the ten countries that sold the largest volume of watermelons in the EU between January and June 2024, it is specified.
