Moroccan Truckers Threaten Highway Blockade Over Toll Hike

To their great surprise, road hauliers who were expecting preferential night-time pricing on motorways learned that the management of Autoroutes du Maroc (ADM) has increased the rates through the elimination of the "prepaid card". A card that offered them a 10% discount at toll booths.

Transport and logistics professionals are angry with ADM and threaten to block the motorways. And for good reason, the elimination of the 10% tariff reduction authorized by the "prepaid card" for at least 15 years.

"Despite our exchanges with the management of Autoroutes du Maroc (ADM) and the sending of a letter to our supervisory authority on this subject, it seems that we have not been heard and that our interlocutors have not understood either the scope or the latent risks involved," laments Abdelilah Hifdi, president of the Transport and Logistics Federation (FTL), also president of the CGEM parliamentary group in the House of Advisors.

An incomprehensible situation because a preferential night-time pricing on motorways, between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m., had been promised to the FTL. "Night-time pricing is likely to have a very positive impact on the environment, reduce the number of road accidents on the national network, ensure a significant reduction in the maintenance costs of dilapidated roads on these same roads and generate additional financial resources for ADM," explains the president of the FTL.

For now, "the file is in the hands of the president of the CEGM who has promised to intervene with the government to avoid any risk of overflow. I’m afraid I won’t be able to contain the anger of the base," warns Abdelilah Hifdi.

In Morocco, motorway tolls account for 7 to 10% of the freight transport sector’s turnover, according to FTL data.
