Moroccan Travelers Targeted by Thieves at Spanish Highway Rest Stops

This year, many Moroccans Residing Abroad (MREs) who went to Morocco to spend the summer vacation have been victims of thefts, particularly in the Murcia region.
The MREs are the target of a band of professional robbers who lie in wait for them at their stops in Murcia. These criminals operate in a matter of minutes without resorting to force. They simply wait at one of the service stations on the A-7 motorway for the MREs, after refueling, to get out of their vehicles to have a coffee or buy a product in the store to commit their crime, according to La Opinion de Murcia.
The victims of these thefts generally file complaints at the competent police stations and continue on their way, leaving it to the police to open an investigation to search for and arrest the perpetrators of these offenses. A difficult task for the investigators, as these expert thieves manage to avoid the security cameras installed in these areas to act without being seen.
The very calculating criminals operated on August 1 or 15, knowing that the flow of MREs will be important on those days and that there will therefore be more victims to strip, as the MREs travel with a significant amount of cash. Most of the victims do not lock their vehicles during their purchases, leaving the thieves free rein. If the car is locked, they do not hesitate to break the window and flee immediately after their crime.
