Moroccan Tourists Outraged by Soaring Cafe and Restaurant Prices

Vacationers in the northern cities of Morocco have expressed their discontent in recent days with the exaggerated rise in prices in cafes and restaurants.

These tourists do not hesitate to post on social networks the photos of consumption bills in various cafes and restaurants to denounce the rise in prices. On one of the bills from a cafe, the price of Sfanj (donut) is 15 dirhams, while breakfast costs more than 75 dirhams. As for the tajines, they cost more than 200 dirhams.

Another bill shows the price of 15 dirhams for a small bottle of water. Another from a chic cafe on the Malabata beach in Tangier shows that the customer paid 90 dirhams for the consumption of a bottle of water and a cup of coffee. The publication of these bills has sparked a wave of comments on social networks. "Is it reasonable to pay this amount for a cup of coffee and a bottle of water?!" wondered an Internet user.

Activists from the northern cities, particularly M’diq and Martil, have also denounced this surge in prices in cafes and restaurants, stressing that it "tarnishes the image of tourism in our cities and pushes visitors to look for other destinations". The activists call on the authorities to take measures "to regulate prices and protect consumers".

In a statement to Aljarida24, Ahmed Bayoud, founding president of the association "With Consumers", also deplored the exaggerated rise in the prices of tourist services in general every summer season. A situation that forces national tourists to spend large sums on services whose quality may be questionable, he explained, calling on the competent authorities to strengthen price control and raise consumer awareness of their rights.
