Moroccan Tourism Surges on Spain’s Costa del Sol, Boosting Local Economy

In order to assess the impact of tourism from Morocco on the city of Costa del Sol, Mohamed Rafaoui, Consul General of Morocco in Algeciras (Cadiz), and José Ortiz, Mayor of Torremolinos (Málaga), held a contact meeting.
According to the figures provided by its municipal council, Torremolinos is attracting more and more tourists from Morocco. Indeed, they were more than 22,000 to visit the city in 2018, for a total of 73,350 visitors, equivalent to 30% for Torremolinos, according to Info Marruecos.
For a small comparison, the same source details that the Spanish tourist who goes to Morocco spends less (114 euros per day) than the Moroccan visiting Spain (150 euros per day). Despite this, the interest of Moroccans in Spain has not diminished. Proof of this, at the national level, the country welcomed 815,000 Moroccan tourists.
Malaga is a cosmopolitan city. Indeed, according to data from the Socioeconomic Observatory of the province of Malaga, 25% of the resident population of this city is of foreign origin, including 1,832 people of Moroccan nationality. This allowed the Mayor of Torremolinos and the Consul General of Morocco to discuss ways and means to strengthen ties with this community.
