Moroccan Tourism Rebounds to Pre-Pandemic Levels, Driven by Diaspora Visits

The arrival of Moroccans residing abroad (MRE) has strongly contributed to the strong recovery of Moroccan tourism, which was hit hard by the health crisis related to Covid-19.
Between June and July, Moroccan tourism began to recover. Morocco welcomed a total of 3.2 million tourists during these two months, 65% of them in July with more than 2 million arrivals. Result: 100% of the arrivals of the same months of the pre-pandemic year 2019 have been recovered. In total, 2.8 million people entered the national territory as part of the Marhaba operation, which exceeds the level recorded before the health crisis.
Despite the closure of borders during the first five weeks of 2022, these arrivals positively impacted tourism revenues, which totaled 36.66 billion dirhams, a recovery rate close to 90% for the first seven months. Morocco owes these performances largely to the MRE. The latter represented 62.5% of arrivals, or 2 million people.
