Moroccan Theater Icon Mohamed El Khalfi Dies at 87

Mohamed El Khalfi, an iconic figure in Moroccan theater and television, died on Saturday in Casablanca, at the age of 87. The actor and director had left the hospital the day before after several weeks of hospitalization.
Born in 1937, he began his career in 1957 with the "Amateur Theater" with Tayeb Sadiki and Ahmed Laâlej. He then founded his own troupes, "Al Msrah Ach-chaâbi" and "Al Fannanine Al Mouttahidine", staging seven plays including "The Cultivated Family" with Touria Jabrane.
A pioneer of the small screen, Mohamed El Khalfi joined the national television in 1962, participating in the first Moroccan television series "Tadhia". His rich career led him to act in many films, TV movies, plays and sitcoms, including "Silence is Forbidden", "The Green Light", "Dilemma/Alwarta", "Aouchtam", "Lalla Fatima", "Here and Elsewhere", "Life is Beautiful", "The Witness" and "The Blood of the Betrayed".
