Moroccan Teen Scores Among Top in Spain’s University Entrance Exam

Touayba Bakkali, an 18-year-old Moroccan living in Toledo with her parents, obtained this year an average of 13.84 (out of 14) in the EBAU, the university entrance exam that all new high school graduates must take in Spain.
Touayba’s parents, originally from Tangier, Morocco, arrived in Spain 35 years ago. They cannot read or write, but have made many sacrifices to provide a quality education for their daughter, whom they have always supported and encouraged to study. As a result, the young woman just obtained a score of 13.84 in the EBAU, reports Telecinco.
The young woman is the seventh of a family of eight children. Her brothers have been a great support to her. "Everyone supported me. I’m very happy, it’s a dream come true," she rejoices. And she adds: "My parents are very proud of me. I owe them everything. They trusted me..."

Touayba lives with her family in the municipality of Portillo de Toledo (Castilla-La Mancha). She and her brothers and sisters were the first Moroccans to attend the local school. She says she has never suffered any kind of discrimination because of her origins and that the teachers have always helped her to improve in all subjects.
"I’ve always made a lot of effort and I’ve tried to do my best," said the Moroccan who has always been a brilliant student. In the EBAU, she obtained 9.75 in Spanish, English and Mathematics II and 9.5 in the History of Spain. In Biology and Chemistry, she obtained a 10. "I started preparing from the beginning of the year. I am very diligent," she confides.
