Every summer, heat and humidity favor the presence of scorpions, snakes, mosquitoes and other pests around homes. Stagnant water, accumulated waste and poor maintenance of outdoor spaces worsen the phenomenon.

In 2025, Morocco recorded 20,583 scorpion stings and 405 snake bites, according to data from Morocco’s Poison Control and Pharmacovigilance Center. Scorpion stings are much more frequent, but snake bites can be particularly serious when medical care is delayed.

According to Morocco World News, the Moroccan Association of Professionals in Pest Control, Disinsection, Dereptilization and Disinfection is calling for strengthened prevention and the use of qualified professionals when the presence of pests becomes significant.

Keep pest refuges away from homes

To limit risks, it is recommended to eliminate stagnant water, maintain gardens and courtyards, and remove piles of stones, wood or rubble located near homes. These areas constitute preferred shelters for scorpions and snakes.

Residents are also advised to check their shoes and clothing before wearing them, to avoid walking barefoot, especially at night, and to educate children about dangerous behaviors.

Mosquitoes proliferate especially in containers holding water, even in small quantities. Regularly emptying buckets, saucers, basins and other containers helps reduce breeding sites near the home.

Steps to avoid after a bite

Do not suck out the venom, make incisions, or apply traditional remedies that could delay medical care. These practices can worsen injuries without neutralizing the poison.

The association also warns against systematic and uncontrolled pesticide use by untrained individuals. Incorrect dosing or an unsuitable product can expose residents, pets and the environment to greater risks than the pest being fought.
