Morocco Sees Surge in Snake Bite Incidents as Summer Approaches

The summer season marks an increase in snake bites, constituting a major public health issue in Morocco. The increase in incidents during this period is linked to the increased activity of snakes, with serious consequences for the victims, particularly in rural areas.
According to Dr. Chafiq Fouad, head of the Snake Bite Control Strategy at the Moroccan Anti-Poison and Pharmacovigilance Center (CAPM), snakes come out of hibernation as early as March and are particularly active in the summer. This activity is due to their need to reproduce, feed and seek coolness, reports Le Matin.
In Morocco, there are two varieties of snakes: harmless colubrids and venomous vipers and cobras. Viper bites are the most common and can be serious, leading to hemorrhagic disorders. Cobra bites, although rare, can cause rapid respiratory paralysis. Hospitalization and administration of antivenom may be necessary.
In 2021, the CAPM recorded 308 cases of snake bites in Morocco, mainly in the Tanger-Tétouan-Al Hoceïma, Marrakech-Safi, and Souss-Massa regions. July is the peak month, and 120 patients required antivenom treatment. The rural population is the most vulnerable, and five deaths have been recorded, the same source specifies.
The Moroccan government has implemented a national strategy to combat snake bites since 2013. This policy includes the training of medical personnel, the availability of antivenom, and the awareness of the population. Specific advice is given to avoid bites, such as wearing loose and long clothing, and maintaining the surroundings of homes.
In rural areas, the rapid evacuation of victims to a health facility is vital. Some gestures such as the use of a tourniquet or incisions are to be avoided, as they can delay care.
