Moroccan students in France: the bill can rise to 2,160 euros per month
For a Moroccan student arriving in France, the bill can now exceed 2,100 euros per month, depending on the profile examined by UNEF. Housing assistance eliminated for many, high tuition fees and a new visa threshold further burden the start of the 2026 academic year.
In its new survey on the cost of student living in 2026, UNEF puts the additional cost borne by a foreign student compared with a French student without a grant at 1,058.48 euros per month. The difference reaches 96.08%, bringing the remaining cost for the foreign-student profile studied to approximately 2,160 euros per month.

Moroccans are particularly affected: with 42,015 enrolled in 2024-2025, they make up the largest foreign student community in France, ahead of Algerians and Chinese, according to official Campus France data.
Housing assistance, enrolment, visa: the bill gets higher
UNEF explains the difference through several expenses that specifically affect students from outside the EU. Differentiated tuition fees can notably approach 2,900 euros for a bachelor’s degree and 3,900 euros for a master’s degree when no exemption applies.
Since July 1, another expense has weighed on many Moroccans. Students from outside the EU holding a residence permit for study can no longer benefit from housing assistance under the same conditions. CAF specifies that a student without a grant now loses this assistance, except notably if they are employed, an apprentice or fall under certain specific situations.
The start of the 2026 academic year adds another constraint. Since August 1, a Moroccan applying for a student visa must prove that they have at least 877.50 euros in resources each month, compared with 615 euros previously. The official France-Visas website confirms this new minimum, meaning 10,530 euros to be documented over twelve months.
And the problem goes beyond foreign students alone. UNEF calculates that the cost of student living increased by 1.66% in 2026 and by 35.84% since 2017. The average rent reaches 627 euros in the private sector and 426 euros in a Crous residence.

For Moroccan students who benefit neither from an exemption from tuition fees nor from housing assistance, the combination of these new rules therefore makes the start of the academic year in France significantly more expensive than before.
