Moroccan Startup Develops Smart Trash Sensor to Revolutionize Waste Collection

The company "Valenvi" operating in waste recycling in the city of Casablanca has designed a smart trash can, to facilitate waste collection. An innovation that was awarded the Orange Prize for Social Entrepreneurship at the local level.
El Mehdi Habib designed a connected sensor that can detect the fill level of trash cans in real time, to optimize collection rounds. It also reduces operating costs by limiting the passage of trucks, and the modulation of trash cans lightens the sorting of recyclable materials.
The company also improves the living conditions of garbage collectors. They no longer need to rummage through landfills in search of recyclable materials. The start-up guarantees them good job prospects for the future, and thus contributes to formalizing small-scale waste collection.
The idea of smart trash cans also came to the founder of "Valenvi" during an entrepreneurship competition in his high school. He had proposed a project that would allow citizens to sort waste more easily. His start-up aims to develop small-scale recycling in Morocco.
It should be noted that "Valenvi" has been active since 2016. It has already won several awards, including the 2020 edition of the Orange Prize for Social Entrepreneurship (POESAM) at the local level, reports l’Agence Ecofin.
