Moroccan MP's Son Gets 8-Year Sentence in International Drug Trafficking Case

The Chamber of Financial Crimes at the Rabat court sentenced the son of a well-known parliamentarian in the north of the kingdom to eight years in prison for his involvement in an attempted international drug trafficking.

Based on information provided by the General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST), the police services under the prefecture of Assilah had foiled in June 2020 an attempt at international drug trafficking from the fishing port of the city. As they were about to set sail, three fishermen employed on a boat were arrested. In total, 185 kg of cannabis resin were found in the boat. Subsequently, a fourth person was arrested as part of this case. Accused of having facilitated the operation in exchange for bribes, two gendarmes were also arrested. During their interrogations, the various suspects denounced the head of this network, the son of a well-known parliamentarian in the North.

All the suspects were brought before the courts. The Chamber of Financial Crimes at the Rabat court handed down its verdict: the son of the elected official was sentenced to eight years in prison, reports Al Akhbar. The two gendarmes share the same sentence. One of the fishermen was sentenced to 6 years in prison. As for his colleagues, they received sentences ranging from 20 months to 5 years each. Another person prosecuted in this case was found not guilty.
