Moroccan Soccer Star Faces Threats After Choosing National Team

Moroccan international Zakaria Aboukhlal (AZ Alkmaar) is the subject of threats from his former teammates of the Libyan national team.
The 20-year-old Moroccan player, who holds dual Moroccan and Dutch nationality, was born to a Libyan father. Last October, he was on the pre-selection lists of the Netherlands, Libya and Morocco.
For having made the choice of the Moroccan selection, he was criticized and is threatened in Libya, the country of birth of his father. "Libyans love football so much. My decision impacted them. You can’t imagine the threats I had to face," explained the Moroccan striker.
According to the young Moroccan player, the threatening messages continued to flood his Instagram account, which he had to lock. For his first match with Morocco, the brand new framework made a sensation. On November 13, he scored his first goal for the national team, 5 minutes after coming on as a substitute for Achraf Hakimi.
