Moroccan Soccer Star Defends Mahrez’s Controversial Comments on African Rivalries

The former captain of the Moroccan national team, Abdeslam Ouaddou, defended the Algerian international, Riyad Mahrez, after his big blunder on Morocco and other African countries.
"Do you think the Moroccans wanted us to win [the 2019 AFCON]? Well, the Tunisians a little. But the Senegalese, the Cameroonians, etc. And it’s because he doesn’t like us." This is essentially what the Manchester City striker said during an Instagram live with BeIN Sports journalist Smaïl Bouabdellah.
The 29-year-old striker’s remarks sparked heated controversy. But the player was supported by the former captain of the Moroccan national team, Abdeslam Ouaddou. "For a few days now, the live between Riyad Mahrez and Smaïl Bouabdellah has unleashed all the passions to the point of almost crossing the line sometimes. Just explain to some of my compatriots that his phrase about the Moroccans also encompassing the Senegalese was humor. This guy is a gentleman," he tweeted.
