Moroccan Soccer Players Missing After Boat Accident Off Tangier Coast

Five players from the Ittihad de Tanger football club were victims of a tragedy at sea on Saturday, off the beach of Restinga, near M’diq. Three of them survived and two are still missing.
According to a survivor, their boat was swept away by the strong winds, while they had cut the engine and dropped anchor. Apparently, the anchor was not well secured. Four players instinctively jumped off the boat. Player Abdelhamid Maali, a member of the Moroccan under-17 team, remained on board and was swept away by the wind.
The others then tried to swim to reach the boat, but they were also swept away by the strong current of the sea. The rapid intervention of the Royal Navy allowed to save Abdelhamid Maali on board the boat as well as two of his companions. Two other players, Abdellatif Akhrif and Salman Harraq, are still missing. The Royal Navy continues the search off M’diq to find them.
