Moroccan Soccer Club Unveils Zellige-Inspired Jersey Amid Cultural Heritage Dispute with Algeria

Le Maghreb de Fès (MAS) has presented its new jersey, whose design is inspired by Zellige. A pattern at the heart of a controversy between Morocco and Algeria over cultural appropriation. Is it a coincidence?
It is a strong message sent by Morocco. On the sidelines of the celebration of its 76th anniversary, scheduled for October 16, the MAS has designed a new outfit reproducing the traditional style of the Fassi Zellige mosaic. A Moroccan art that finds its origins in the spiritual capital.
This presentation comes as Morocco accuses Algeria of having "stolen" an art originating from Fez. Adidas, the designer of the Algerian jersey, has acknowledged its blunder, expressing its regrets and apologizing to the Moroccan people.
