Moroccan Singer Fined $240,000 for Unauthorized Performance of Copyrighted Song

Moroccan singer Latifa Raafat has just been sentenced by the courts to pay a heavy fine for performing the song "khouyi", which is nevertheless part of her repertoire, without obtaining the consent of the rights holders.
During the "Coke Studio" program, broadcast on channel 2M, the artist performed the musical work of Abdelkader Rachdi, protected by copyright, without prior authorization. A complaint had been filed by the family of the Moroccan composer.
Latifa Raafat, who had made minor changes to the song, was ordered to pay the deceased’s family the sum of 2.41 million dirhams, as compensation for the damage caused.
It is not yet known whether the diva of Moroccan song intends to appeal the decision or not.
