Moroccan Singer Faces Backlash, Loses Followers After Israel Concert

Moroccan singer Fatima Zahraa Al-Arousi sparked outrage after giving a concert in Israel. The event, which was organized by the Moroccan Liaison Office in Tel Aviv on the occasion of the Mimouna holiday celebrated by Moroccan Jews at the end of Passover, was shared on social media and quickly sparked a chain reaction.
Anti-normalization activists shared images of Fatima Al-Zahraa Al-Arousi’s performance, which triggered a chain reaction on social media. However, the singer may have anticipated this anger, as she did not announce the event in advance on her social media accounts.
Thus, the Moroccan singer is said to have lost about 11,000 subscribers in the three days following the publication of the news. This loss would have reached nearly 60,000 subscribers on Instagram, which represents about 3% of her fan base.
Reactions on social media have been mixed, with some severely criticizing the singer’s decision, while others defend her, arguing that Morocco and Israel have signed a peace treaty and that the singer has the right to perform wherever she wants.
The criticism is not as virulent as in some Arab countries such as Algeria, Egypt and Jordan, where artists are often accused of being accomplices to mass killings. Looking closer, the singer has not lost her biggest fans and those who unsubscribed from her account were not necessarily the most engaged.
