Moroccan Seasonal Workers in Spain Receive Entrepreneurship Training for Post-Harvest Success

Fifty Moroccan seasonal workers participated in the first phase of the Wafira project, a program to empower these women who participate each year in the berry harvest in Huelva. As part of this, they received entrepreneurship training to start income-generating activities upon their return to Morocco.
"Wafira" (which means abundance in Arabic) is a project funded by the European Union through the Migration Partnership Facility (MPF) mechanism. It complements the Gecco migration program that allows more than 12,000 Moroccan seasonal workers to arrive in Spain each year. Its objective is to capitalize on the experience of these women who will be able to undertake and take charge of themselves upon their return to Morocco.

The first 50 seasonal workers to benefit from this project received entrepreneurship training held at the headquarters of the Costa de Huelva cooperative. An opportunity for these women to share their experiences with members of the Association of Agri-Food Cooperatives of Andalusia. During this three-month session, the seasonal workers were trained by a multidisciplinary team of university professors and business leaders.
Collective entrepreneurship and business management according to the cooperative model were on the agenda of the exchanges. Several seasonal workers are interested in the idea of opening grocery stores, clothing stores or selling agricultural products (eggs, cheese, milk), or doing pastry, once they return to Morocco.
