Moroccan Seasonal Workers Arrive in Spain for Expanded Strawberry Harvest

A first wave of Moroccan seasonal workers have arrived in Huelva, Spain to participate in the strawberry and berry picking season. An increase of 5,000 more people than originally planned is announced.
Expected from February to March, the Moroccan seasonal workers have started arriving in Huelva. There are currently more than 3,700 on the field. About 670 others are expected shortly "to complete the first phase of the contracting agreed between the Spanish and Moroccan Executives". The second phase starts on February 7 with the arrival of 3,402 workers, according to the Spanish authorities, who have announced the issuance of 1,911 visas, reports Huelva Informacion.
For this campaign, priority is given to workers who have "years of experience in the sector". The actors involved in the recruitment have managed to select since December 2022, nearly 5,000 seasonal strawberry, berry and citrus pickers in Marrakech, Kenitra, Fez and many others.
Regarding the social protection of the workers, the Federation of the League of Spanish Women’s Rights had appealed to the government to ensure that the rights of the seasonal workers, whether they come from Morocco or Latin America, are respected. The Federation intends to work for "the improvement of the income of these workers, their financial independence and their economic and social integration and the respect of their dignity and their rights without discrimination at all stages of the recruitment process".
